Dutch School in Finland
The Dutch School in Finland is a school for Dutch Language and Culture (NTC) in the Helsinki region for Dutch-speaking children aged 3 to 14. In general, one or both parents speak Dutch or Flemish as their mother tongue.
There are currently over 130 children attending the school, divided to groups 1 to 8 and a toddler group. The school is affiliated with the Foundation for Dutch Education Worldwide (NOB) and is accredited by the Dutch Inspectorate of Education.
For Dutch education, they use a regular teaching method, supplemented with additional themes that relate to the Netherlands or Belgium, such as geography, topography and history. They also find it important to give the children a piece of Dutch culture by organizing King's Day (Netherlands) and Sinterklaas. As part of the curriculum, there is a winter activity in February and a 4-day summer camp in the first week of the Finnish summer holidays (early June). They offer a total of approximately 120 teaching hours per year.
Pupils are tested on the level achieved by reading level and taking CITO and method-related tests. Pupils are on average 1 to 2 years behind when compared to their peers in the Netherlands.
Classes take place every Saturday from 10:15 to 13:45. Since August 2013, the Westendinpuiston koulu in the city of Espoo has been the home of the school.
